Odyssey Contemporary Art and Performance

Odyssey: a simulator in Second Life dedicated to art and performance

This event from Nov 2 is history now. Thanks to all, especially Gaz, Janez, Man and Domenico but also to the crowed of artists and SL VIPs. I think it was a success and I think we should talk about.
What does performance means in SL. Does everybody agree to Mans theories? Is it allowed to force the audience into sex? Is it ok to fire atomic and H bombs in SL? Questions and questions...
(Please post your pics/vids here [Has someone a sound recording I have had probs :( ]

Here is the entire TALK: acting as aliens talk.rtf

OK I start it: I thought we could have a very nice talk about art. with long theoretical answers, smart people and good behaviour.... Why had it to end like this?

I didn't like this meeting. The problem was that it wasn't moderated at all, and there was no rule. And I don't understand why some of the participants made an exhibition of oneself, like some 3 years old kids. Everything have it's own place. The white light bomb was ok, but not here. I'd like to participate next time also but with rules. I don't want to see half an hour of chaos and funny shitts.

But don't you think it was a kind of creative chaos? Showing what is immanent in SL performances? Haven't there been some smart words from Man Michinaga as a kind of "overlay" or if you like "background"?
This chaos in SL is very different from chaos in real life, isn't it?

I came here to listen people, to have a dialog and maybe that's why I was disappointed. So from the communication point of view chaos is a chaos. And I don't understand why they spam, just because is cool, or they want to be in prime plan showing their new toy, or what ... I like the chaos in the sandbox a lot, those are my favorite places, but this wasn't the best time and place to do this.

you asked: "Why had it to end like this?" - you wanted an answer or it was just a sarcastic question

"Why had it to end like this?" was a bit provocative, yes. But I am really interested in your opinion and I am sure you are not the only one who thinks like this.
Because of special people in this event I knew before that we will have a kind of funny chaos.
But I can promise you - it is not always like this and I might set up and moderate a "real discussion" round table in the near future.

"What does performance means in SL."
I didn't hear all, because of lag, crash, my child... maybe somebody will quote some important sentences so we can discuss about them also.

I don't remember who told that an artist said that the audience must be in-world when watching performance. First of all the audience must to know what is Second Life, and the only way to know what is it is to play a few days at least. After that if he watch in-world a performance or the video documentation he will understand much more.

Before I entered Second Life I didn't understand what is it. Even if I played before shooter games online or I worked in 3d software I couldn't understand what is MMORPG. My friend send me a link with Gazira's "13 Most Beautiful Avatars" work, and we wanted to enter this world. In the first hour we didn't understand where we are or what we have to do. He left the "game", and I said I will stay another hour to explore a bit. When I rezzed my first cube and I moved a bit, I said whooaaau. Anyway, I needed more than a week to understand what are the possibilities, and what is MMORPG and so on.

So in my opinion most of the audience won't understand or feel well what is a performance in SL. If the real life performance art is so complicate to decode for most of the usual people (I don't know how to say) we can imagine how complicate can be this cyberspace's performance art. If you project on big size screen, you won't resolve too much, it will be just an effect. Maybe a temporary solution can be if a group of experts in communication (advertising company?) will make a short 5 minute film, where they introduce the viewer in this world. And the audience will be invited to watch this presentation, before watching any SL or other cyberspace related artwork. This movie can be used freely by anybody in the world.

I'd like to participate in the future in meetings where we can discuss about performance art (cyberformance?),because this forum is cold.
In RL I like very much the group-performance black market international This meating had something similar with what this guys are doing, maybe some of the performers are interested to make group-performances, interact with each other, without a previous scenario.
